The Richard and Lydia Evans Bursary for a gifted Dalit student - Caius College, Cambridge
The Oxford and Cambridge Society of India is pleased to announce the Richard and Lydia Evans Bursary for a gifted Indian Dalit student to study at Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge. The first scholarships will be offered to students who seek September 2015 entry (and for which the application deadlines are fast approaching - 15 October 2014 through UCAS for most cases).
It has been advised by Richard and Lydia Evans that all students who come from the scheduled caste or scheduled tribe backgrounds will be eligible for the University of Cambridge Dalit Bursary. The Richard and Lydia Evans Bursary was established to encourage and facilitate an eligible student from India who might otherwise not be able to afford the cost of studying at Cambridge.
The Bursary will only be available to those students already offered a place at Caius through the usual admissions process, for any subject. Applicants would be expected to obtain the certification of the Dalit status from an organisation in India, and submit it to the Oxford and Cambridge Society of India, which already offers scholarships to Indian nationals admitted to study at Oxford and Cambridge.
The priority is to support undergraduates, but these could include Affiliated Students who have already achieved a first or upper second class Honours (or equivalent) in an approved undergraduate degree from an Indian university and have been accepted by Caius to take a Cambridge BA course. This would normally entail taking a degree in a year less than usual, in most cases starting the Cambridge course at the beginning of Year 2.
Candidates would be expected to be able to demonstrate that they have applied for any available funding from Central or State Government sources. This bursary will cover any shortfall in the cost of Fees, Maintenance or Travel, for an eligible student. Students are intended to return to India at the end of their studies
