Ujjain Vice Chancellor Man-Handled - Communal Politics Over National Calamity?

Vikram University vice chancellor Prof Jawaharlal Kaul was admitted to Sanjeevani Hospital after members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajarang Dal manhandled him at his office in Ujjain on Monday. The mob also vandalised his office.

The VHP and Bajrang Dal created ruckus after vice chancellor Kaul appealed to students to help their Kashmir classmates in the time of devastation. About 100 Kashmiri students are studying in different departments of the university.
The activists barged into the university and straight away moved to the VC office. They lodged their protest against Kaul’s appeal and vandalised his office. They also manhandled him. The university staffers rushed Kaul to Sanjeevani Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable. Raising voice against ‘hooliganism’ on the university campus, teaching and nonteaching staffers have decided to keep university shut for a day on Tuesday. Ujjain police registered a case against accused persons and claimed that they arrested them.

15 Members of VHP, Bajrang Dal Arrested

UJJAIN:  Police have arrested 15 members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal for the attack on the Vice-Chancellor of a university in Ujjain on Monday. (Ujjain University Vice Chancellor Attacked for his Help J&K Appeal). Jawahar Lal Kaul, the Vice-Chancellor, was attacked on Monday, allegedly by radical right-wing groups, for asking students to help the people in Jammu and Kashmir. Reacting to the news of the arrest, Mr Kaul said, "I am satisfied with the way police and administration are handling my case", adding that the state administration had assured him of its support.

Mr Kaul had also appealed to local landlords to waive rent for Kashmiri students of his university, who were in financial trouble owing to the condition of their families back home.  Mr Kaul, who had to be hospitalised after the attack, had earlier told NDTV, "A group had come to my office and I was telling them that I have made such an appeal, when they suddenly turned violent". The mob ransacked the office, damaging furniture and computers, and targetted other areas of the university.

"What happened with a professor (earlier) flashed before my eyes and I felt sick. My colleagues managed to rescue me and sent me to a hospital," said Mr Kaul, who was discharged today after spending a day in the hospital. The "professor" he referred to was Professor HS Sabharwal, who had died of cardiac arrest eight years ago in Ujjain after he was allegedly manhandled by workers of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad. But all the accused were let off by the court for want of evidence.

The Vikram University was shut on Tuesday in protest against the violence. "We condemn what has happened with our VC, so we have shut the university," said Kamal Joshi, a leader of the university's teachers' association. To protest the incident, the Congress had surroundedthe office of the superintendent of police and demanded immediate action.
