Torture and death for lovers: Girl lynched by family, boy beheaded in Haryana village

Rohtak: On Wednesday evening, a village in Haryana looked on as a young girl was lynched by her family, and a boy beheaded. Hours ago, they had returned to the village, thinking that their families would finally allow them to marry. The girl's father, uncle and two others have been arrested for the crime, a shocking example of medieval-style killings in the name of 'family honour' in Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's hometown, Rohtak. Nidhi Barak, 20, and Dharmender Barak, 23, eloped and went to neighbouring Delhi on Tuesday, since their families back in the Gharnavati village did not approve of their relationship. Nidhi was a student of fine arts, while Dharmender was pursuing a technical course. Nidhi's parents allegedly persuaded her to come back, promising not to harm the young lovers. The police say what followed was hours of torture for the couple at Nidhi's home, ending with their death. The girl was killed in full public view. The boy was brutally beaten and his arms and legs broken, before being beheaded. His body was allegedly dumped at a public square in the village. Relatives of the girl were allegedly caught in the act of cremating her, when a police team arrived. They had been alerted by a villager. The police then took the girl's half-burnt body and the boy's remains for a post-mortem.

Haryana: Girl lynched, boy beheaded
In a suspected case of honour killing, a couple was allegedly lynched by the girl's family in Rohtak district of Haryana on Wednesday evening. While the girl, Nidhi Barak, 20, was reportedly killed in public view and then cremated, the boy, Dharmender Barak, 23, was reportedly beaten up, his arms and legs broken, and then beheaded. The youth's body was then thrown outside his house in the village. Nidhi and Dharmender, both Jats, were residents of Gharnavati village in Kalanaur, Rohtak district. The incident came to light when one of the villagers informed the police. Till late night, Dharmender's family had not lodged a formal complaint with the police. According to the police, Nidhi was pursuing a fine arts course in Rohtak, while Dharmender was doing an ITI diploma course in Rohtak. On Tuesday morning, Nidhi and Dharmender reportedly left their homes and did not return. According to reports, they had decided to get married. Nidhi's family finally managed to contact her on Wednesday morning and persuaded her to return home, reportedly with the assurance that they would not harm her or Dharmender. "Our preliminary information has revealed that when Dharmender and Nidhi returned to the village this evening, they were taken to Nidhi's home. They were both assaulted by her relatives. Nidhi's family first lynched her and then cremated her. Then they broke Dharmender's arms and legs and beheaded him. A few of them then threw his body in front of Dharmender's house," said DSP Anil Kumar. Nidhi's father, Billu, has been arrested, while the rest of her family members are reported to be missing. "We managed to recover Nidhi's remains from her pyre. We have taken the boy's body for a post-mortem examination," said the DSP.
