RIL files Rs 100cr suit against 'Gas Wars' authors
In a fresh legal notice issued to the authors and distributors of the book 'Gas Wars: Crony Capitalism and the Ambanis', Reliance Industries Ltd and its chairman Mukesh Ambani have demanded Rs 100 crore by way of damages and added the charge of quoting "an utterly defamatory and mischievous statement by one Mr G K Gandhi at the 15th D P Kohli Memorial Lecture". The reference is to former West Bengal governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi's statement at the golden jubilee celebrations of CBI that "Reliance is a parallel state", an observation that grabbed media headlines. This notice, sent on April 23, was received by the authors, Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Subir Ghosh and Jyotirmoy Chaudhuri. Earlier, RIL and Mukesh Ambani had served a notice on April 16, the day after the book was released, and Reliance Natural Resources Ltd and its group chairman Anil Ambani had sent one on April 22. The book deals, among other things, with the alleged irregularities in the pricing of natural gas in India, an issue that has been in the news ever since Arvind Kejriwal raised it publicly in January this year.
