Houston Police chief to Trump: Please, keep your mouth shut if you can't be constructive // I Cannot Remain Silent Our fellow citizens are not the enemy Mike Mullen, Seventeenth chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
NB: Congratulations to this courageous American public servant. There are many officers of the Indian Police Service who feel the same way about the impunity enjoyed by government ministers and/or allies of the ruling party when they commit crimes or indulge in hate speech. Few of them can speak as openly as the Houston Police chief when in service. Those who do, get into bad trouble. Nor would police officials dare to show sympathy with protesters as they have done recently in certain places in the USA.
This is because the separation of powers and the autonomy of prosecution is not adhered to in India. Sadly, this is true for many judges as well. Our rulers should keep in mind that their shameless contempt for law and sabotage of justice will destroy the legitimacy of the State. This is as true for India as for the USA. If you keep on with your transition to outright tyranny, you will be laying the foundation for your own destruction. DS
