SAARC sanitation conclave ends with Kathmandu Declaration

KATHMANDU: The fifth South Asian Conference on Sanitation (SACOSAN-V) concluded here today with the signing of the Kathmandu Declaration. Ministers and head of delegates from the eight participating nations of South Asia signed the Declaration, which includes specific points to accelerate the momentum of sanitation in the region.
Through the inter-ministerial conference, eight countries from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) have unanimously agreed to declare defecation free South Asia by 2023 and collaborate for sustainable environmental sanitation. The report on sanitation from the Saarc show over 675 million people from the region still practice open defecation while one billion among the 2.5 billion people without access to improved sanitation across the globe belong to the eight countries.
