PEACE MARCH TO EXPRESS SOLIDARITY WITH THE VICTIMS OF PUNE RIOTS

The Rashtriya Ekatmata Samiti, which comprises of various secular and progressive organisations of Pune (Lokayat is a part of this Samiti), is organising a PEACE AND HARMONY MARCH this Sunday, June 15, 2014.

As you are all aware, following the posting of derogatory posts related to Chhatrapati Shivaji and Chhatrapati Sambhaji, right wing organisations indulged in violence and arson in Pune.

More than 200 public transport buses and private vehicles were damaged in the stone throwing. Muslim homes, shops, bakeries, mosques and madrassas were deliberately attacked and damaged / burnt down. Worst of all, on June 2, an IT professional, Mohsin Sadiq Shaikh, was attacked with hockey sticks and rods near Hadapsar and beaten to death.

Following the killing of Mohsin, the police swung into action, made a number of arrests and brought the situation under control.

Despite this police action, the riots have spread fear among the Muslim community.

The PEACE MARCH is being organised to express our collective anger and anguish about the riots and condemn the murder of Mohsin Shaikh, and spread the message that people of all communities must be able to live without fear in secular and progressive Maharashtra. We demand that all those responsible for the killing and rioting should be punished, the mastermind behind the riots be identified and arrested, and all those whose shops and bakeries have been damaged or burnt should be suitable compensated.

Do join us for this PEACE MARCH in large numbers.
