Gurgaon: Traffic cop apologises after AAP fights for man thrashed ahead of chief minister's visit

A traffic policeman in Gurgaon, accused of thrashing a rickshaw puller who entered a road that had been cordoned off for Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's convoy to pass, has written a note of apology, but claims that he accidentally hit the man.

"I was trying to manage the public. While waving my baton, a rickshaw puller who was coming from behind got hit. I didn't purposely hit him... I apologise for this. I will take care of all his medical expense and will not repeat this," Assistant Sub-Inspector Ram Niwas wrote in his note.

The apology is addressed not to the rickshaw puller, 40-year-old Sanjay Sahu, but to Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party. A local AAP leader Ramesh Yadav has alleged that Mr Sahu was badly beaten up by the cop for entering the road blocked off for Mr Hooda's motorcade on Sunday.

He also alleged that other policemen stationed there refused to help the rickshaw puller as he bled from injuries to his face and he had to turn to people at an AAP office nearby for assistance. Mr Yadav said AAP workers took the man to hospital. Mr Niwas has been transferred to another department pending an enquiry ordered by the police.

Local cops, however, alleged that Mr Kejriwal's party was "unnecessarily highlighting the issue"; they claimed that the rickshaw puller is not interested in pursuing the matter.
