AAP holds broom yatra across Gujarat to take on 'anti-people & pro-corporate' Narendra Modi // Mob attacks AAP members during Republic Day celebrations

Making their foray into Gujarat, the Aam Aadmi Party launched what it called a 'jhadu' or broom yatra across the state on India's 65th Republic Day. In Ahmedabad today, the yatra was led by TV journalist-turned-politician Ashutosh who said the intention behind the campaign was to highlight the "anti-people and pro-corporate stand" of the Narendra Modi government.

The yatra to be taken out in all the 33 district headquarters in the state will culminate at Gandhinagar on January 30 with a rally near Mahatma Mandir, a monument in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. The AAP is now finalising plans to put up its candidates in all the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat, Mr Modi's home turf. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party held a two-day state level core committee meeting recently in which strategies for contesting the polls were worked out.
 
The AAP announcement has given a new twist to the battle for Lok Sabha, so far seen as a direct contest between the BJP and the Congress. Though recent opinion polls give the BJP a clear edge in the general elections, due by May, experts say the rise of AAP, buoyed by its success in Delhi and currently engaged in an ambitious membership drive recruiting several high-profile members, might upset the forecasts.
 
Mr Modi has recently been seen attacking the rookie Aam Aadmi Party in his speeches, which is a departure from his precision ambush on the Congress and its top leaders with a particular surname. In a rally earlier this month, Mr Modi slammed AAP for its "lack of experience" and said the country needed "people who have experience to take it forward."

 Mob attacks AAP members during Republic Day celebrations 
A mob attacked workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during Republic Day celebrations on Sunday, leaving several persons injured. A group of people, under the banner of Hindu Krantikari Sena, allegedly attacked AAP workers when they gathered at Ram Bagh Garden to unfurl the national flag, forcing them to run away from the place.
AAP convener Ashok Talwar, who was at the spot, alleged that the unruly crowd uprooted the pole, tore national flags and thrashed workers of AAP. Talwar claimed that the protesters comprising young boys and girls were shouting against AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for speaking against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
A complaint has been lodged with the police, he said. “It was a narrow escape for all the AAP activists including women who fled from the scene otherwise they might have been killed by the angry mob,” he alleged. AAP members alleged that the attack was a pre-planned move to sabotage the Republic Day function organised by the AAP

NB:  An interesting obituary to a great intellectual. My knowledge of the situation is limited, but as regards this article,  I'm uncomfortable with the argument that there should be no objection to the participation  of communal parties  in a democratic alliance. My views on this are conditioned by the history of religion-based mobilisations in India, where the communist movement has from time to time allied with communal groups of all colours, with disastrous consequences. Some material on this theme may be read here .  Nor can I agree that Islamists, Hindutva groups or Khalistanis etc. can be described as 'religious parties'.
