India's World Class hooligans: Woman attacked with beer bottle at Khan Market in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The day the capital was observing International Women's Day, pledging to make the city safer for women, a 25-year-old had a beer bottle smashed on her face by five youths at a popular restaurant in Khan Market. The woman had slapped one of them for passing lewd comments and getting into an altercation with her husband when he objected. The glass shards pierced the woman's skin and she was rushed to hospital bleeding profusely.

The five youths, one of whom is a model and another son of a CBI officer, fled when bouncers and managers tried to catch hold of them, but they ran out of luck since CCTV cameras had captured the entire incident. Using the footage, the cops raided several places throughout the night and finally arrested all the five men. They seem to belong to affluent families. One of them, Manish, lives in CBI Colony in Vasant Vihar. Vikas alias Vicky, who is a model, lives in the Rani Bagh area in northwest Delhi and has recently returned from Mumbai. The other three — Rohit Sehgal, Kamaldeep and Paramdeep — are in the real estate and finance business and also stay in Rani Bagh. Two of them are studying for their graduation via correspondence in Delhi University. They have been sent to judicial custody for 14 days, a police source said, adding that the court had dismissed their bail pleas.

The incident took place around 11.30pm on Friday when the victim had gone to the restaurant with her husband and eight other relatives. Neha Chawla (name changed) had gone to a Khan Market restaurant with her businessman husband on Friday night. They were accompanied by eight relatives, some of them women. Five youths, who were drinking at the restaurant, continuously stared at the women and made them feel uncomfortable, according to an FIR filed by Neha. Neha alleged in her complaint that the men started passing comments and smiling at them. When Neha and her husband objected, the five got into an altercation with her husband. Neha stood up and slapped one of them. He was later identified as Rohit Sehgal.

The accused, police sources said, picked up a beer bottle from their table and smashed it on Neha's face. She began to bleed. There was chaos in the restaurant and guests began to rush out. The five then joined the exodus and managed to run away. The police was informed around 12.30am. A large number of cops rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area even as Neha was rushed to the hospital for treatment. She was bleeding heavily from her nose, cheeks and ears, the source added.

Teams were formed under the supervision of DCP SBS Tyagi and SHO, Tughlak Road. Raids were conducted across the capital after the accused were identified through CCTV footage and call records. A case of assault, causing hurt, wrongful restraint, molestation, outraging a woman's modesty and common intention was registered against them.
