JNU Students, Teachers Attacked By Masked Men; Mob Chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' Outside Gate

NB: Today, three weeks after the Delhi Police entered the Jamia campus and assaulted students, JNU campus security permitted masked hooligans shouting patriotic slogans to assault students and teachers on campus and go on a destructive rampage. Law and order in India's capital is under the direct control of the Union Home Ministry. After the recent unrest over CAB, persons alleged to have caused damage to public property in UP were made to pay damages by the Adityanath government. I doubt the masked men who ran amuck in JNU will even be identified - let alone be made to pay for the damage. For all we know they might be rewarded for their 'patriotism'.

UP Police Totally Communalised, Tortured Me, Says Activist Sadaf Jafar

After letting hooligans run amuck in the JNU campus for several hours, the Delhi Police now has established a heavy presence there. What were they doing when repeated calls for help were made to them last night? " A former Union Minister says “the police here helps the goons and not the innocent people. It’s a strange situation across the country.” A similar incident happened in 2017, in Ramjas College. Then too, the police did nothing. JNU teachers have accused "the JNU administration of being responsible for the orgy of violence.... without the connivance of the Administration, the entry into the campus of several of the goons who were not from the campus, and their subsequent exit without being caught, would not have been possible" Are persons and organisations allied to the Sangh Parivar exempt from the law? Could Sarvashri Modi and Shah and Bhagwat kindly let us know?  May I remind the police of all ranks that they are the servants of the public and guardians of law. They are not servants of the RSS. They are meant to protect us, not stand by and watch as we are assaulted. What has been happening in Uttar Pradesh and in Delhi is a shameless abuse of governmental authority. We will all pay a heavy price for the spineless behaviour of the police officers who allowed all this to happen.

I remind all victims of fascist assault (I too know what it is) that the violence of the Sangh Lafang is a sign of weakness, not strength. They have an absolute majority in Parliament, they control all major executive and ceremonial posts, the SC even threw out the Loya death case, yet they repeatedly resort to hooliganism, intimidation and lies. What a pathetic use of political power! What a shameful display of their values and goals! The fact that masked men with lathis can enter a central university campus in India's capital, very close to a police station, in disregard of campus security, and mercilessly attack students including women students, shows what kind of 'civilisational renewal' is going on in India, and the true nature of Hindutva's utopia Many still do not understand the basic element of Hindutva politics: prolonged systematic and calibrated violence.

This is why Maoist violence can never be an answer, because ideologically corrupted state structures and fascist politics thrive on violence. Only a non-violent mass movement for social justice and a secular state can heal our wounded polity. Indians who value democracy will indeed stand up and resist this fascist onslaught. The more they try to crush dissent, the more the tyrannical  nature of the Sangh's project will come to light. And all those op-ed writers who complain about Maoist violence may kindly ask themselves why this kind of violence is acceptable to our ruling dispensation. DS

JNU simmers over attack on campus, student protests spread across country
JNU violence LiveUpdates: Protests erupted across the country after a group of masked men wielding sticks, rods and sledgehammers terrorised Jawaharlal Nehru University for close to three hours on Sunday evening. As many as 26 students and teachers were injured in the attack which eyewitnesses said were carried out by the ABVP — a charge the RSS student outfit denied. Students from various colleges in Mumbai and those in Aligarh Muslim University and Jadavpur University in Kolkata held overnight peaceful protests in solidarity with their counterparts in JNU. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has ordered the Delhi Police to hold an inquiry, as the HRD Ministry condemned the incident, blaming outsiders for it, and said “anarchy will not be tolerated”. Eyewitnesses accused police of failing to stop the mob from entering the campus or ending the violence sooner, despite calls from JNU as well as frantic students and teachers.

A little before 8 pm on Sunday, police gathered outside JNU’s north gate, having been called in following the violence unleashed by masked men on campus that lasted close to three hours. What followed was dozens of men, their faces covered with mufflers, chanting slogans — “Desh ke gaddaro ko, goli maaro saalo ko”, “Naxalwad murdabad’ and “Na Maowad, Na Naxalwan, Sabse Upar Rashtrawad” — not allowing ambulances to reach the campus by puncturing tyres and smashing windows. They did so next to a police barricade and in front of a police detention van, with many of the men chanting slogans of ‘police zindabad’. The men threatened journalists not to click photos or come nearby and also manhandled Swaraj India head Yogendra Yadav. All this while, over 250 policemen looked on without intervening. source 11.44 Jan 6

Intercepted Whatsapp chatter indicates planned nature of attack

Multiple students and teachers of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) were attacked on Sunday night by groups of men wearing masks, according to media reports and messages from people on the campus. JNU students president Aishe Ghosh was among those attacked on Sunday night as goons with “iron rods” went on a rampage at the university campus, the students’ union said. Multiple students told Huffpost India that the violence was ongoing and shared photos of broken doors and shattered glass at campus buildings. Students have alleged that the violence was carried out by members of the  ABVP and also that the security guards on campus did not prevent the attackers from going on a rampage on the campus.

Delhi Police personnel are currently stationed outside the campus, between the mob and the main gate. It is currently unclear if any police personnel have entered the JNU campus.
HuffPost India’s Aman Sethi saw men in masks outside the JNU main gate beating up people who took out phones to film the violence. A faculty member told HuffPost India on condition of anonymity that Buddha Singh, Associate Dean of Students, was with the group, who said they were from Delhi University.

JNU professor Atul Sood told NDTV that students and teachers were attacked with stone.
“These were not small stones, these were big stones that could have broken our skulls. I fell on the side and when I came out, I saw cars completely vandalised including my car,” he said. The JNU students union tweeted out a photo of JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh with blood on her face. The union also tweeted out a photo of some the attackers...
