Nepal - Talks with Maoist-led bloc fails

KATHMANDU: The High Level Political Committee (HLPC) on Saturday turned down the CPN-Maoist-led alliance's proposal on the modality for the purported round-table conference. The meeting of HLPC and 33-party alliance held at the HLPC’s secretariat in New Baneshwor today ended on a negative note after the cross-party mechanism of major five parties did not buy the five-point proposal apropos to the round table.

Following the debacle, both the sides stated that the ongoing negotiation has come to an end.

In today's meeting, the dissenting parties maintained that the all-party round-table conference should be called with the dissolution of interim government led by Khil Raj Regmi and deferral of the November 19 election, CPN-UML leader Raghujee Pant told THT Online.

Emerging from the meeting, CPN-Maoist leaders told the media that the ongoing negotiation with HLPC leaders has terminated after today's meeting. They also warned of launching stern protest.  Earlier today, top leaders of CPN-Maoist and UCPN-Maoist, including their chairmen Mohan Baidhya and Pushpa Kamal Dahal, had held a meeting.

In the meeting, Dahal had tried to convince the CPN-Maoist to take part in the November 19 election, while Baidhya maintained that the round-table conference should make all decisions regarding the CA election.
