An Appeal to contribute to the Chhattisgarh PUCL / छत्तीसगढ़ लोक स्वातंत्र्य संगठन को योगदान की अपील

Dear Friends,
You have been hearing of the tough challenges that the Chhattisgarh PUCL and other human rights defenders have been dealing with in Chhattisgarh –  fake encounters, sexual violence, and suppression of democratic voices in Bastar; increasing assaults on minorities and dalits; suppression of land rights for mining and land acquisition in Northern Chhattisgarh; and human trafficking and bondedness.

The National Convention of the PUCL will be held on 16th -17th -18th December 2016 at Raipur, Chhattisgarh where we expect around 300 human rights defenders from all over the country to listen to our stories, share their experiences, express solidarity, and chart out new ways to rise up against the challenges to come.

We are a small organization, dependent only on contributions of members and friends. Hosting a programme at this scale is no doubt ambitious, but it is the need of the hour. We need to raise several
lakhs of rupees to make this effort a success including printing of our reports and making far away voices from rural Chhattisgarh heard.

आप भली भांति अवगत है कि वर्तमान में, छत्तीसगढ़ में, छत्तीसगढ़ पी. यू. सी. एल और अन्य मानव अधिकार रक्षक कितनी कठिन चुनौतियों का सामना कर रहे है – बस्तर में फर्जी मुठभेड़, यौन हिंसा और हर जनवादी आवाज का दमन; अल्पसंख्यकों और दलितों पर बढ़ते हमले; उत्तर छत्तीसगढ़ में खनन और भू-अर्जन के नाम पर जल-जंगल-ज़मीन की बेतहाशा लूट; मानव तस्करी और बंधुआ मजदूरी....

16-17-18 दिसम्बर 2016 को रायपुर, छत्तीसगढ़ में PUCL का राष्ट्रीय अधिवेशन होगा जिसमे देश भर से 300 मानव अधिकार रक्षक एकत्रित होंगे. वे हमारी कहानियाँ सुनेंगे, अपने अनुभव साझा करेंगे, आने वाले दिनों की कठिन चुनौतियों के लिए कुछ नयी राहें टटोली जाएँगी.

हम एक छोटा संगठन हैं जो केवल सदस्यों और मित्रों के योगदान पर निर्भर है. इतने वृहद् आकार का आयोजन निश्चित रूप से हमारी तरफ से महत्वकांक्षी है, परन्तु वह समय की मांग भी है. इस प्रयास को सफल बनाने के लिए, कई लाख रूपये की आवश्यकता पड़ेगी, जिससे हमारे रिपोर्ट भी छप सकें और ग्रामीण छत्तीसगढ़ के दूर दराज़ की आवाज़ों को भी सुना जा सके. हमारी आपसे हार्दिक अपील है कि आप अवश्य योगदान करें और अपने सहमना मित्रों को भी कहें. हम रु. 5000 और अधिक के योगदान की अपेक्षा कर रहें है.

Third degree torture used on Maruti workers: Rights body

NB:  An interesting obituary to a great intellectual. My knowledge of the situation is limited, but as regards this article,  I'm uncomfortable with the argument that there should be no objection to the participation  of communal parties  in a democratic alliance. My views on this are conditioned by the history of religion-based mobilisations in India, where the communist movement has from time to time allied with communal groups of all colours, with disastrous consequences. Some material on this theme may be read here .  Nor can I agree that Islamists, Hindutva groups or Khalistanis etc. can be described as 'religious parties'.
